  • Description

A CONGOLESE GOVERNMENT SPOKESMAN HAS SAID THAT AS MANY AS TWENTY-FIVE-THOUSAND PEOPLE MIGHT BE EXPELLED FROM THE CONGO.

THESE INCLUDED NATIONALS FROM THE FORMER FRENCH CONGO-BRAZZAVILLE, BURUNDI AND MALI, WHOSE COUNTRIES ARE BELIEVED TO BE GIVING AID TO THE CONGOLESE REBELS.

CONGOLESE TROOPS AND POLICE BEGAN ROUNDING UP THE UNDESIRABLES IN LEOPOLDVILLE EARLY ON WEDNESDAY (AUGUST 19) AND HERDED THEM INTO AN EMPTY OUTDOOR COMPOUND WHERE THEY WERE REGISTERED AND HELD UNTIL DEPORTATION.

THE FIRST TO BE EXPELLED LEFT LEOPOLDVILLE BY FERRY ON WEDNESDAY (AUGUST 19) FOR BRAZZAVILLE, ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE CONGO RIVER.

THE CONGOLESE PRIME MINISTER, MR. TSHOMBE, SAID HE WAS SORRY TO TAKE SUCH ACTION BUT HE HOPED THOSE EXPELLED WOULD CONVINCE THEIR GOVERNMENTS HOW WRONG THEIR POLICY WAS.

HE SAID ONLY THOSE INVOLVED IN SUBVERSIVE ACTIVITY WOULD BE EXPELLED.
