  • Description

Four Palestinian gunmen and their five hostages left the Egyptian Embassy in Madrid, Spain, on Monday night (15 September) bound for the airport and an aircraft waiting to fly them to Algeria.

The gunmen first seized the Embassy on Monday morning. They took three hostages .. the Ambassador, Mr. Mahmud Abdel Ghaffar, the Consul, Mohammed Mekky and the Press Attache, Mohammed El-Afifi.

Later the ambassadors of Iraq and Algeria went to the building to negotiate and offered to accompany the gunmen and their hostages on the plane trip to Algeria.

When they first seized the embassy, the Palestinians threatened to blow it and the diplomats "sky high" unless Egypt denounced its recent peace accord with Israel.

Mr. Ghaffar later signed a document, as did the ambassadors of Iraq, Kuwait, Algeria and Jordan, which strongly criticised the interim peace agreement.

However, Egyptian Embassy First Secretary, Mr. Fraouk Baraka described the document as worthless piece of paper on Tuesday (16 September) because it had been signed under duress.

The Palestinians had bobby-trapped the entire embassy building with dynamite and were heavily armed.

A cordon of Spanish troops ringed the building as the gunmen and their prisoners made the short trip from the embassy to a waiting coach that took them to the airport. The operation went without hitch.

Later the aircraft flew them to Algeria where all the hostages were released unharmed.

The PLO have denied any connection with the incident.
