    INDIAN DEMONSTRATIONS MARCHED THROUGH DELHI YESTERDAY (SATURDAY) TO PROTEST AGAINST A PARLIAMENT BILL TO GIVE THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE THE STATUS OF "ASSOCIATE OFFICIAL LANGUAGE" AFTER 1965.

    THE DEMONSTRATORS, LED BY VETERAN SOCIALIST LEADER DR.RAM MANOHAR LOHIA, AND DR.RAGHU VIRA, PRESIDENT OF THE JAN SANGH, CLAIM THAT 98 PER CENT OF THE INDIAN PEOPLE SPEAK HINDI AND THERE IS NO POINT IN HAVING ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE.

    THEY MARCHED TO PARLIAMENT HOUSE, WHERE THE GOVERNMENT WAS INTRODUCING THE BILL, AND CHANTED ANTI-ENGLISH SLOGANS.A POLICE CORDON LINED UP IN FRONT OF THE GATES AND PUSHED THE DEMONSTRATORS AWAY, A FEW MINOR SCUFFLES ENSUED.LATER THEY SQUATTED ON THE TRAFFIC ISLAND AND WERE ADDRESSED BY THEIR LEADERS.

    MEANWHILE, INSIDE PARLIAMENT HOUSE, SOCIALIST M.P.'S AND MEMBERS OF A RIGHT-WING HINDU-DOMINATED PARTY, PROTESTED ANGRILY OVER THE BILL.THE SPEAKER FAILED TO RESTORE ORDER, AND AFTER PROLONGED SHOUTING THE HOUSE MADE A SERIES OF SNAP VOTES TO EXPEL THREE UNRULY DEMONSTRATORS.A SAFFRON-ROBED HOLY MAN OF THE RIGHT-WING JAN SANGH PARTY WAS CARRIED AWAY AFTER DEFYING REPEATED ORDERS FROM THE SPEAKER TO STOP HIS LOUD PROTESTS.HE WAS LATER SUSPENDED FOR THE REST OF THE SESSION FOR SHOUTING AT THE SPEAKER.SECURITY MEN ALSO DRAGGED OUT OF THE HOUSE A SOCIALIST MEMBER WHO DEFIED THE SPEAKER'S ORDERS, AND ANOTHER JAN SANGH WAS SUSPENDED FOR THE REST OF SESSION FOR SHOUTING AT THE SPEAKER.

    (UNDER THE INDIAN CONSTITUTION HINDI WAS TO REPLACE ENGLISH AS THE OFFICIAL LANGUAGE IN 1965 -- 15 YEARS AFTER THE COMMENCEMENT OF THE CONSTITUTION.BUT FOLLOWING WIDESPREAD PROTEST FROM NON-HINDI SPEAKING PEOPLE.THE GOVERNMENT AGREED TO GIVE ENGLISH ASSOCIATE STATUS AFTER THAT DATE.
