  • Description

ABOUT 5,000 SOUTH VIETNAMESE TAKING PART IN A MAY DAY PROCESSION THROUGH SAIGON MARCHED ON THE U.S. EMBASSY YESTERDAY (SUNDAY) IN AN ANTI-AMERICAN AND ANTI-WAR DEMONSTRATION. RIOT POLICE THREW BARBED WIRE BARRICADES ACROSS STREETS TO PREVENT THE CROWD FROM REACHING THE EMBASSY.

THE DEMONSTRATORS SHOUTED "AMERICANS GO HOME" AND CARRIED PLACARDS CALLING FOR THE END OF THE CONFLICT WITH THE VIET CONG. THE POLICE, WITH WICKER SHIELDS, TRUNCHEONS AND TEAR GAS GRENADES, BARRED THE MAIN ROAD TO THE EMBASSY. THE MAYOR OF SAIGON TRIED TO PERSUADE THE DEMONSTRATORS TO DISPERSE, BUT THEY TOOK NO NOTICE OF HIM. INSTEAD SOME OF THEM SCRAWLED ANTI-AMERICAN SLOGANS ON THE PAVEMENT.

AMERICANS IN THE CAPITAL, INCLUDING 20,000 SERVICEMEN, WERE ORDERED TO KEEP OFF THE STREETS DURING THE MAY DAY PARADES AND CELEBRATIONS.

EARLIER ANOTHER PROCESSION DEMANDED SOCIAL, ECONOMIC AND EDUCATIONAL REFORMS. THIS PROCESSION INCLUDED A PARADE OF RICKSHAWS, HORSE-DRAWN CARTS, BUSES AND TAXIS.
