TRANSCRIPT: SEQ 3: KENNEDY: "I want to be a voice for reconciliation within this country at a time when there are high government officials that are placing race against race, the youth against the old, the south against the north, that are playing to the fears and frustrations of people within our society, to their deepest prejudices, I want to be a voice of reconciliation, a voice that appeals t the best within people, within our country, and I return to the Unites Senate for that purpose."

Background: Governors, Senators and Congressmen in the United States are today (Wednesday) celebrating their victories in yesterday's mid-term elections. In Massachusetts, Democratic Senator Edward Kennedy has been returned to the Senate. In New York, Republican Governor Nelson Rockeefeller has won a fourth consecutive term of office. And in California, Republican Governor Ronald Reagan has been returned to office again.

Senator Kennedy, accompanies by his wife and other members of the Kennedy "clan", celebrated the double victory of his re-election and having overcome the adverse publicity of the Chappaquidick incident last summer when Mary Jo Kopekne drowned in his crashed car. At his campaign headquarters in Massachussetts, he addressed his supporters:
More predictable were the wins of Governor Rockefeller in New York and Governor Reagan in California - as 124 million eligible voters went to the polls.

At stake were all 435 seats in the House of Representatives, 35 Senate seats and the Governorships of 35 states. The Republican Party of President Nixon needed to gain 7 seats to get control of the Senate. They failed. The Democratic Party still controls both houses of Congress.
