  • Description

More than a quarter of a million people took part in Taiwan's "Double Tenth" or National Day celebrations on Sunday (10 October).

SYNOPSIS: The huge crowd filled the plaza outside the Presidential Palace in the capital, Taipei. Included in the crowd were 10,000 overseas Chinese from more than 60 nations.

The celebrations were presided over by the Taiwanese President, Mr. Yen Chia-kan, who restated his government's determination to build up Taiwan and regain control of the Chinese mainland. President Yen told the crowd that his government would support what he termed "all anti-communist revolutionary actions on the mainland." He said the Taiwanese military would provide land, air and sea support for any uprising in China. The Taiwanese armed forces put on a display during the celebrations.

A choir of 30,000 youths sang the Taiwanese national anthem and schoolchildren in the crowd formed the Chinese characters reading "Long Live Nationalist China." Afterwards, troops carried the national flag at the head of a huge procession.
