Background: Thawing Winter ice and heavy Spring rains has caused widespread flooding throughout America's Mid-west states, recently, Iowa was one of the worst hit areas. Valuable farmland is under several feet of water, towns awash and hundreds of people homeless.
National Guardsmen, Civil Defence units and Red Cross help rushed into the stricken districts, manning river banks defences and supplying relief to flood refugees.
Dozens of families have been evacuated from the Sioux City lowlands flooded or threatened by the swelling Big Sioux River, jammed by two-miles of ice. Dynamite has been exploded to break the ice-dam.
Milwaukee is suffering the worst flooding in forty years - every river and creek in the area is bursting its banks.
In Nebraska National Guardsmen and Regular Troops tour submerged farmland by boat and helicopter rescuing, or trying to rescue marooned farmers. The farmers are more interested in their land than fear of the rising waters.
It is expected that soon power in many of the Mid-west areas will fail and that a serious sewerage disposal problem will have to be solved.
