  • Description

Visnews filmed Dec 9 the arrival of Prime Minister Charles de Gaulle and new Deputies at the opening session of the newly-elected National Assembly in Paris.

Among those arriving were Paul Reynaud, former Prime Minister and one of the leaders of the Independent (Conservative) Party named as a possible candidate for the important post of Speaker of the Assembly; and some of the 71 new Deputies from Algeria and the Sahara.

Observers saw the General's attendance - he is a man who dislikes politicians of all forms - as a sign of the importance he attached to the new institutions and reforms adopted by the supporters of the fifth Republic.

It was the first time the National Assembly was open for a parliamentary session since last June when the Pflimlin Administration collapsed following the "Generals' Revolt" against governmental weakness.

The purpose of today's session: to elect its officers - in particular, the Speaker.
