Dr. Kamuzu Banda -- President for life of Malawi -- has told his parliament that he intends to travel to South Africa for top-level talks next month.
Dr. Banda told parliament on Thursday (July 2) he expected criticism and condemnation of his visit, but he intended to go in the open "for all to see, to hear and to note."
In Pretoria, South Africa Foreign Affairs Minister, Dr. Hilgard Muller, confirmed the Malawi leader's visit.
President Banda's state visit to South Africa will be the first to be made to the Republic by the head of state of an independent black African country.
Last month at its summit meeting in Addis Ababa, the Organisation of African Unity passed a resolution banning any of its member countries from holding a dialogue with South Africa. Malawi is a member of the O.A.U.
