  • Description

Nine engineers and workers were killed when two experimental cable cars collided at high sped near Grenoble late on Thursday (26 October). The accident occurred during a test run at the nearby ski resort of Les Deux Aples.

The two self-propelled cabins were inexplicably running on the same cable, when one slid down at more than 100 kilometres an hour (60 mph) and crashed into the other. The wreckage fell onto a rock face. All nine people on board, seven employees of the cable car manufacturer and two resort employees, were killed.

The crash came as further trials were being carried out on the revolutionary single-cabin self-propelled cars, which were due to go into operation this winter.

The new system would have used three 40-place cars transporting 3,000 people an hour to the summit of Lac Noir Peak, which soars 450 metres (1,500 feet) above Les Deux Alpes.
