    Emil Zatopek, Czechoslovakia's world famous athlete, won the eight mile international cross-country race at San Sebastian, Spain, today, and then announced his retirement from running.

    With this victory, the 35 year-old Czech confounded the experts who had made Britain's George Knight favourite and the other Britonn, Alan Perkins, Basil Heatley hot challengers for the top places.

    Even Zatopek himself, before the race, had said that Knight ought to win. Instead, however, Knight - who complained of the change of climate and a headache finished only 18th. Best of the Britonn was Perkins, who came fourth,
    Zatopek's time for the 8-mile course was 39 minutes, 45.3 seconds. Hamoud Ameur (A north african who lives in Lille) came second, 25 yards behind and Zatopek's countryman, Miroslav Jurech, was third.
