Background: INTRODUCTION: In South Africa, allegations that more than 300 black babies have died in a refugee camp in the Ciskei Homeland have been officially denied. The Ciskei Secretary for Health, Dr. J.S. Coldham, said the figure was 'ridiculous' and the correct number was 'about 69'.

SYNOPSIS: There are between thirty and fifty thousand refugees scattered in groups around the Thornhill district of the Ciskei, which borders on the Transkei. The majority of them are Xhosa people, indiginous to the Transkei, who did not wish to remain there after the homeland was granted full independence by South Africa last October. They settled in conditions of stark poverty, which led to malnutrition, tuberculosis, and gastro-enteritis. An average of five children a day have been dying according to white residents in the area, including doctors, who have been helping with food and medical facilities. Since this film was shot, newsmen have been banned from the area by the South African government.
