    Members of the Baghdad pact countries arrived in Ankara to day for consultations.

    A large crowd watched the arrival of British Chiefs of Staff, who were welcomed by the British Ambassador to Turkey Mr James Bowker, and the Turkish five-star general Necati Tacan, and Turkish Chief of Staff General Feuzi Mengit.

    The Iraq Chief of Staff was met by the Iraqi Ambassador, together with other high ranking colleagues. The Iraq Foreign Minister, Mr Nurettin Basaayam was met by the Turkish Foreign Minister, Mr Fatim Rustu Zurlu.

    Last to arrive, soon after 9 p.m. was Mr Selwyn Lloyd, to lead the British delegation. He was met by Mr Zorlu, Turkish Foreign Minister.

    He said that he attached the greatest importance to the friendship and alliance which exited between Turkey and Britain based on their membership both of NATO and the Baghdad Pact. "In the United Kingdom we watch your progress in building the new Turkey with interest and sympathy," he said. "We must stand together and work together for collective defence and economic cooperation. that is what the Baghdad Pact means."
