Background: On the arrival of the Royal Couple there was the usual pomp and ceremony before Her Majesty and His Royal Highness made their way to Rideau Hall (Government House) where they were greeted by Their Excellencies the Governor General and Mrs. Michener.
As customary, the Queen placed a wreath on the National War Memorial and spoke with the veterans who attended the ceremony.
She attended an Ecumenical Service on Parliament Hill when religious leaders of various denominations participated. (shown in our footage) After the Ecumenical service Loyal addresses were delivered to the Queen and her response was received. The latter Ceremony would normally take place in the Senate Chambers. In this instance the dais and Throne were set up on the Hill in order that as many people as possible could participate. Parliament Hill was jammed.
Because of crowded streets and roads, the Royal Couple were delayed two hours on their trip to Cornwall where they were to board the Royal Yacht Britannia. From Cornwall the Royal Couple sailed down the St. Lawrence Seaway to Montreal and the EXPO site.
At the EXPO site the Royal Couple were to tour all Canadian Pavilions and the Pavilion of Great Britain; and have luncheon at the Toundra Restaurant in the Canadian Government Pavilion. These events were carried through. The Prime Minister suggested a ride on the Minirail -- it was an unscheduled ride and was the highlight of the visit to EXPO so far as EXPO-goers are concerned. It was a perfect way for visitors to begin a day at EXPO --EXPO, the biggest candle on Canada's birthday cake.
Canadians hold a deep and abiding affection for this lovely Monarch, Queen Elizabeth II and His Royal Highness Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.
