    THE FIRST BATCH OF 50 RECRUITS FOR THE MALAYSIA SARAWAK RANGERS, MOSTLY DYAKS, ARRIVED IN SINGAPORE BY BOAT ON OCTOBER 13 FROM SARAWAK.

    THE MALAYSIA SARAWAK RANGERS IS A UNIT FORMED BY NATIVE INHABITANTS OF THE TERRITORY TO HELP FIGHT TERRORIST BANDS ATTACKING THEIR TERRITORY FROM ACROSS THE INDONESIAN BORDER.

    AT THE WHARF TO MEET THEM WERE BRITISH ARMY COLONEL I.G.WELLSTEAD AND COLONEL UNKU NAZARUDDIN, DEPUTY COMMANDER OF THE FOURTH MALAYSIAN FEDERAL BRIGADE.

    COLONEL UNKU NAZARUDDIN TOLD THE RECRUITS THAT THE FORMATION OF THE MALAYSIA RANGERS WOULD ALWAYS BE REMEMBERED AS A HISTORIC OCCASION BY SARAWAK AND SABAH (NORTH BORNEO).

    AFTER PUTTING THEIR BAGGAGE INTO A BRITISH ARMY VEHICLE, THEY WERE DRIVEN BY BUS TO AN CAMP IN JOHORE, SOUTHERN MALAYA, WHERE THEY WERE SERVED TEA BY SOME OF THEIR COMPATRIOTS WHO HAVE BEEN TRAINING IN MALAY FOR SOME TIME.

    COLONEL WELLSTEAD WILL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE RECRUITS' TWO WEEKS BASIC TRAINING.THEY WILL RECEIVE FURTHER TRAINING AT ANOTHER CAMP IN NORTHERN MALAYA.

    SOME OF THE RECRUITS CARRIED THEIR BELONGINGS WRAPPED IN MATS.OTHERS BROUGHT WITH THEM LONG, HOME-MADE KNIVES, KNOWN AS PARANGS.

    AFTER GRADUATION, IT IS EXPECTED THEY WILL PLAY AN IMPORTANT IN THE DEFENCE OF MALAYSIA AND SARAWAK AGAINST ATTACKS FROM INDONESIA.
