Background: Soccer is a rapidly-growing spectator sport in Japan and the United States, and the game has now become big enough in both countries for them to take part in international matches. On Saturday (10 September), Japanese soccer fans crowded into a Tokyo stadium to watch a home side, the Furukawa Electric Company, clash with the mighty Cosmos of New York -- one of the best sides in the North American league, and who number among their players the famous Brazilian, Pele and West Germany's Franz ???.

SYNOPSIS: Furukawa, in the light shirts, playing right to left, kicked off but rapidly lost the initiative.

Cosmos took an early lead when Giorgio Chinaglia, playing number nine, made use of this chance.

Cosmos one-nil ahead -- and the team's Brazilian star, Pele, at number 10, unsuccessfully tried to press home the advantage from a free kick.

But the home crowd saw Furukawa rally, and after scoring the equaliser Yasuhiko Okudera at number eight put them in the lead.

Furukawa two, Cosmo one. The Americans failed a corner kick minutes later, but in the end it turned out not to matter too much. A Furukawa counter-attack also failed -- twice, in rapid succession, and it was the beginning of the end for the Japanese side.

Despite the crowd urging them on in the second half, the home team couldn't score again.

The Americans recovered their balance, and pressed on relentlessly. Tony Field, number seven, made it two-all.

The equaliser seemed to put fresh heart in Cosmos, and Chinaglia came in again for his own second goal to put them into a three-two lead.

Cosmos ahead -- and a foul against Pele gave them an unbeatable four-two final score. Pele took the chance for revenge -- and made no mistake about it.
