A MASSED MEETING IN LONDON'S TRAFALGAR SQUARE TODAY (SUNDAY) PROTESTED AGAINST THE CONTINUING SUPPLY OF ARMS BY GREAT BRITAIN TO THE FEDERAL NIGERIAN GOVERNMENT. THE DEMONSTRATORS CARRIED THEIR PROTEST FROM TRAFALGAR SQUARE TO BRITISH PRIME MINISTER HAROLD WILSON'S RESIDENCE IN DOWNING STREET, WHERE THEY WERE DISPERSED BY POLICE.

BEFORE THE DEMONSTRATION TODAY SOME 30 DEMONSTRATORS KEPT AN ALL-NIGHT VIGIL ON THE PAVEMENT OUTSIDE 10 DOWNING STREET. THEY JOINED A LARGER GROUP IN TRAFALGAR SQUARE TO HEAR SEVERAL SPEAKERS URGE GREATER SUPPORT FOR BIAFRA, THE BREAKAWAY EASTERN REGION OF NIGERIA.

AMONG THOSE WHO ADDRESSED THE MEETING WAS JOURNALIST AND WRITER MR. AUBERON WAUGH, SON OF THE NOVELIST EVELYN WAUGH. MR. EDDY EKESIOBI, A BIAFRAN JOURNALIST, AND MR. R.B.K. OKAFOR, A FORMER FEDERAL NIGERIAN MINISTER, ALSO ADDRESSED THE GROUP.

MR. OKAFOR TOLD THE RALLY THAT BIAFRA WOULD NEVER SURRENDER. "EVERYBODY IN BIAFRA IS A SOLDIER," HE SAID. "WE WANT ARMS -- NOT FOOD. WE ARE PREPARED TO DIE RATHER THAN SURRENDER."
THE PRIME MINISTER WAS NOT AT HOME WHEN THE PROTESTERS MARCHED ON DOWNING STREET. HE WAS IN BLACKPOOL FOR THE LABOUR PARTY ANNUAL CONFERENCE, AND HE WAS GREETED THERE BY A SMALL BIAFRAN DEMONSTRATION.
