TRANSCRIPT: (SEQ. 6): REPORTER: "Warden, would you say that if you had been in control, you would have recommended that the institution be stormed?



WARDEN: I don't understand......



REPORTER: In other words, taken by force.



WARDEN: No, I would not have said that. I would have evaluated the situation very, very carefully. I'm not exactly sure what my decision would have been, but to say I would have had it stormed, I really can't say.



REPORTER: Do you think that (indistinct) was a very important ingredient in the solution of the problem?



WARDEN: Being on the inside, in a cell, with three prisoners protecting me, I had very little communication. As far as my own personal feelings I'm very proud of my governor. I see him in a different light, and I think that the people of New Jersey are king of lucky.



REPORTER: Warden, what happened to you in three, during the twenty-four hours you were in custody? Where were you kept, how were you treated, what was said to you? What did you know about the (indistinct) or getting out?



WARDEN: The prisoners who kept me in the cell, this was in "four-wing" in cell thirteen I believe, were if anything, nothing but gentlemen. They made sure I had food I ate what they ate. They shared their cigarettes with me. I quit smoking eight years ago, but I sure started again.



REPORTER: Warden what precautions will you take when you go back? What will be different?



WARDEN: Precautions of what kind, sir?



REPORTER: To make sure that this doesn't happen again. Have you decided to take any precautions, to change the.....



WARDEN: I don't think my crystal ball is nay more clear now than it has ever been before, sir."

Background: Prisoners at the New Jersey State Prison, at Rahway in the northern part of the state, released six hostages and gave up control of two winds an Thursday night (25 November). The move came after authorities had agreed to listen to their grievances.

The hostages, held since prisoners seized parts of the prison in a riot on Wednesday night, were all reported in good condition. Nearly 600 prisoners took part in the action. The prisoners agreed to give up their control of the prison after three local reporters and a representative of the New Jersey State governor were admitted to her their demands.

The prisoners were asking for no reprisals against them because of the riot, better food, more religious freedom, and an end to alleged racism, brutality and drug trafficking by guards.

On Friday (26 November), prison warden Samuel Vukcevich spoke to newsmen from his hospital bed. He had been stabbed and bruised in the initial stages of the riot.
