  • Description

Ghanaians had an opportunity to see one of the warships of the modern Dutch Navy at the weekend, when the 2,850 ton frigate Tjerk Hiddes docked in Tema Harbour on a six-day informal visit.

On Saturday (May 13), Visnews cameraman John Adoboe joined the crowds thronging onto the ship for a glimpse of everything from the radar to the missile-launching equipment.

During the visit, the ship's crew had a full programme of sight-seeing ashore, and the Captain met the Chairman of the National Redemption Council, Colonel Acheampong.

SYNOPSIS: Ghanaians had a chance to see life aboard a warship of the Seventies, when a Dutch naval frigate berthed in Tema Harbour for a six-day unofficial visit last weekend. The frigate is the fifth ship to carry the name of a seventeenth century Dutch admiral -- and she soon proved popular with sight-seers.

While Ghanaians flocked abroad, the crew had an opportunity for sight-seeing ashore. A full programme of sporting activities had also been arranged. The ship's Captain paid a courtesy visit to the Chairman of Ghana's National Redemption Council, Colonel Acheampong.

The frigate, based on an original British design, is equipped with radar for hunting submarines. It's also armed with Sea Cat guided missile launchers for action against aircraft and surface targets. The ship can be completely sealed off in the event of radio-active fall-out. But on this occasion, the Dutch ship of war left her visitors with a distinct impression of friendliness.
