NEWSMAN: "You say the Arab solidarity has been shaken by the peace initiative. How can it be reached again?"

SHAZLI: "It can be reached again if Sadat corrects his line and says well, I was wrong, and I made a mistake and e had to correct our new strategic line and then the Arabs will come together again. The majority of the Arab states are willing to come to a compromise once President Sadat declares publicly that his initiative was a failure. Now, he is not going to do that because when he declared his initiative he said 'If my initiative fails I will resign' and he don't want to resign so he is not willing to declare his initiative is a failure."

NEWSMAN: "You intend to found a movement against President Sadat?"

SHAZLI: "Well, I don't have any plans for that now, you see, and it's better to wait and see how things are going to develop. The idea now, is as a citizen, as Egyptian, as a person who has achieved quite a lot, for his country, and my country has given has given me a lot, I think it's my obligation that I must say what I think is right, and I hope that what I say could reach the ears of Egyptians. And then it's up to the Egyptians to decide what they want to do."

According to Reuters Newsagency when the Ambassador was told of his suspension and recall he said it was "very interesting", but added he would wait for official notification before issuing a statement.

Background: Egypt has ordered its Ambassador to Portugal, Mr. Saad Shazli, to return to Cairo to face trial after his denouncement on Monday (19 June) of President Sadat's government as a dictatorship. The Middle East News Agency says the ambassador, a former Army Chief-of-Staff, has been suspended for serious violations of his job. Mr. Shazli's attack on President Sadat took the form of a letter to international news agencies in which he also accused the Egyptians leader of weakening the country's armed forces, making Israel more intransigent and shaking Arab solidarity. In an interview on Monday (19 June) with Portugal's State television service, EDP, Mr. Shazli said his decision to denounce President Sadat was "absolutely individual". He was also asked about Arab solidarity.
