  • Description

The French cable ship, "Ampere", set the last portion of a French cable in the Channel off the French coast May 23 in an operation aimed at exchanging electric power supplies between Britain and nine countries of mainland Europe, next Autumn.

The main exchange of power will be between Britain and France. At the same time, they will be linked to the Benelux countries, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Italy and Spain - a group exchanging electricity supplies for several years now.

The French cable enters the Channel at Le Portel near Boulogne. Its other end fixed to a buoy mid-way in the Channel will be connected to its English end entering the water at Lydd, Kent, next week.
