  • Description

PARTIZAN BELGRADE REACHED THE FINAL OF THE EUROPEAN SOCCER CUP TONIGHT (WEDNESDAY) AFTER THEY WERE BEATEN 1-0 BY MANCHESTER UNITED IN THE SECOND LEG OF THE SEMI-FINAL. PARTIZAN WON THE TIE ON A 2-1 AGGREGATE, HAVING BEATEN MANCHESTER 2-0 IN THE FIRST LEG.

A CAPACITY CROWD OF 62,500 SAW A FIERCELY CONTESTED STRUGGLE IN WHICH MANCHESTER UNITED BATTLED FOR LONG PERIODS AGAINST A TIGHTLY PACKED PARTIZAN DEFENCE. IN THE FIRST HALF MANCHESTER SEEMED TO BE HAVING IT ALL THEIR OWN WAY BUT AS THE GAME PROGRESSED IT APPEARED THAT PARTIZAN WANTED THIS AND MANCHESTER BECAME MORE AND MORE FRUSTRATED AS THEY PILED ON THE PRESSURE TO NO EFFECT.

AFTER TWENTY MINUTES OF THE SECOND HALF, MANCHESTER UNITED'S RIGHT-HALF CRERAND AND PARTIZAN BELGRADE'S INSIDE LEFT MILADINOVIC WERE SENT OFF BY THE SWISS REFEREE FOLLOWING A CLASH BETWEEN THE TWO PLAYERS. MANCHESTER UNITED SCORED THE ONLY GOAL OF THE MATCH IN THE 73RD MINUTE WHEN LEFT-HALF STILES SENT IN A LOW BALL AND SOSKIC IN THE PARTIZAN GOAL TURNED THE BALL INTO HIS OWN NET.

PARTIZAN BELGRADE NOW MEET EITHER INTER MILAN, THE PRESENT HOLDERS, OR REAL MADRID IN THE FINAL WHICH WILL TAKE PLACE IN BRUSSELS ON MAY THE ELEVENTH.
