At a press conference in Brussels, Dec. 30th. Prime Minister Eyskens said the best solution to the Belgian strike one for his Government to stay in office and continue with its financial programme - the immediate cause of the strike. In the end the "famous common-sense" of the Belgians would re-assert itself.
The strike had now become an organized attempt to overthrow the legal Government, he said, and there were signs that it had been provoked by communists agitators.
Mr. Eyskens warned that King Baudouin should not interfere in the situation. There was no need for him to address his people as the radio, and a Crown Council - called together only in times of extreme crisis - would not be assembled. The Prime Minister had spoken with King Baudouin the night before.
