  • Description

VARIOUS SHOTS OF GOWON SPEAKING, MURITALA (SOF)

TRANSCRIPT: GOWON: "THERE ARE ONLY TWO WAYS OF ENDING THE REBELLION, THROUGH PEACE TALKS OR MILITARY SUPPRESSION. THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT'S POSITION ON PEACE TALKS IS VERY CLEAR. THE REBEL LEADERS MUST GIVE UP SECESSION AND ACCEPT THE 12 STATE STRUCTURE. I HAVE BEEN DELIBERATELY SILENT ON THE VARIOUS PEACE INITIATIVES. I'M GLAD TO SAY THAT MOST OF IT, IF NOT ALL, OF THESE PEACE INITIATIVES, WHICH THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT APPRECIATES, ARE BASED ON THE PRESERVATION OF THE TERRITORIAL INTEGRITY OF NIGERIA AS ONE COUNTRY. THE (INAUDIBLE) PEACE MISSION IS A CASE IN POINT. THERE RE TWO PEACE INITIATIVES WHICH HAVE BEEN GIVEN SO MUCH SINISTER PUBLICITY OF LATE THAT I FEEL COMPLETED TO MENTION THEM IN PASSING. I HAVE IN MIND THE PEACE MOVES BY THE COMMONWEALTH SECRETARIAT AND THE VATICAN AND THE WORLD COUNCIL OF CHURCHES. I WISH TO STATE QUITE FIRMLY THAT AT NO TIME DID MR. ARNOLD SMITH (COMMONWEALTH SECRETARY) DISCUSS WITH ME THE POSSIBILITY OF USING A COMMONWEALTH PEACE FORCE TO SEPARATE THE SO CALLED COMBATANTS. THE WOULD BE UNTENABLE IN A SITUATION IN WHICH WE AS A SOVEREIGN COUNTRY ARE COMMITTED TO PUTTING DOWN AN INTERNAL REBELLION."
