  • Description

About five thousand Greek students staged a mass rally in the grounds of Athens University on Tuesday (1 October). They were demonstrating against alleged United States support of Turkey over the Cyprus crisis. Against police orders, the demonstrators later marched through Athens to the United States Embassy where they shouted slogans, calling for an end to United States interference in the Mediterranean and, in particular over Cyprus.

The demonstration coincided with the announcement by United States President, Gerald Ford, that he would reject all attempts by the United States Senate to cut off foreign aid to Turkey. On Monday night (30 September) the Senate voted to suspend aid on the grounds that Turkey had used United States supplied equipment for aggressive actin in Cyprus. President Ford Opposed this move which he said would "destroy and hope of success for initiatives" the United States had or might make towards a solution of Cyprus dispute.

A similar demonstration occured in Salonika, Northern Greece, where on Tuesday night (1 October) about one thousand students marched on the United States consultant. The students lowered and burnt the United States flag but otherwise the demonstration was without incident.
