TRANSCRIPT SEQ 2: MR BLYTHE:- "WELL, I THINK THE FEELING TODAY IN GHANA IS THAT THE ATTEMPT WAS MADE TO SOUR THE WHOLE EFFECT OF THE ROYAL TOUR. THE QUEEN HAS HAD A GREAT PERSONAL SUCCESS DOWN THERE AND I THINK THAT AFTERWARDS THESE PEOPLE WANTED TO CREATE AN INCIDENT WHICH WOULD HAVE DETRACTED FROM THE WHOLE TOUR".

    INTERVIEWER:- "WHO ARE THESE PEOPLE?"

MR BLYTHE:- "WELL, THERE IS A GROUP OF LEFT-WING ELEMENTS IN THE GOVERNMENT THERE WHO HAVE ALWAYS BEEN AGAINST THE ROYAL TOUR, AND HAVE DONE EVERYTHING POSSIBLE IN THE PAST TO PREVENT IT, AND THEY HAVE FAILED UP TILL NOW.

INTERVIEWER:- "BUT DO YOU THINK THEY CHOSE THEIR TIME WELL WHILE THE QUEEN WAS STILL IN THE COUNTRY?"

MR. BLYTHE:- "I DON'T THINK THAT THEY EXPECTED THIS TO HAPPEN SO QUICKLY, THEY HAD A LIST OF NAMES. ONE OF MY COLLEAGUES, THE FIRST TO BE STOPPED, MR STAFFORD, HAD TO LEAVE THE COUNTRY ON THURSDAY, I THINK IT WAS, FOR PERSONAL REASONS, AND IT WAS THEN WE DISCOVERED THAT PEOPLE WERE BEING STOPPED."

INTERVIEWER:- "WHERE DO YOU SAY THESE LEFT-WING ELEMENTS ARE IN RELATION TO PRESIDENT NKRUMAH?"

MR. BLYTHE:- "WELL, THEY ARE VERY CLOSE TO HIM, AND USE HIM, I THINK, CONSIDERABLY. PRESIDENT NKRUMAH'S A MAN WHO LISTENS TO PEOPLE AND ACTS ON WHAT THE LAST MAN HE HAS TALKED TO, AND I THINK THAT THESE PEOPLE, SOMEDAY, MAY EVEN TRY OVERTHROWING HIM THEMSELVES."

INTERVIEWER:- "IS THERE ANY TRUTH IN THE ALLEGATIONS THAT GHANAIANS ARE MAKING OF SCURRILOUS REPORTING BY FLEET STREET JOURNALISTS?"

MR. BLYTHE:- "WELL, I THINK THAT ALL JOURNALISTS THAT HAVE BEEN DOWN THERE HAVE DONE THE JOB OF WORK THEY DO IN ANY COUNTRY. WE GO THERE, WE REPORT WHAT WE SEE. THE GOVERNMENT OF GHANA OF COURSE DOESN'T SEE IT THAT WAY, THEY THINK WE SHOULD ONLY PRINT WHAT THEY WANT US TO PRINT, AND OF COURSE THE ATTACKS THAT HAVE BEEN MADE ON THE COUNTRY HAVE AFFECTED THEM, AT THE SAME TIME I THINK THEY ARE USING THIS AS AN EXCUSE."

HOWEVER, A GHANAIAN IMMIGRATION OFFICER IS REPORTED AS SAYING THAT HE WAS ORDERED TO DETAIN THE TWO MEN ON INSTRUCTIONS BY THE GHANA SPECIAL BRANCH FOR QUESTIONING CONCERNING POSSIBLE LEGAL ACTION FOR ARTICLES PUBLISHED IN BRITAIN. BOTH MEN WERE ALLOWED TO LEAVE GHANA NOV 20. THAT SAME EVENING, MR BLYTHE WAS ASKED WHAT WAS BEHIND THE ATTEMPT TO KEEP HIM IN GHANA.
