  • Description

AT THE END OF THE FIRST WEEK OF THE FRENCH MEAT PRODUCERS' STRIKE YESTERDAY (TUESDAY), MEETINGS WERE HELD IN MANY PARTS OF THE COUNTRY TO BACK DEMANDS FOR INCREASES IN THE WHOLESALE PRICES OF MEAT.

AT ALBAN, IN SOUTHERN FRANCE, IN THE MARKET WHERE NORMALLY HUNDREDS OF ANIMALS ARE SOLD FOR PARIS CONSUMPTION, ANGRY FARMERS GATHERED. THEY WERE PROTESTING OVER THE GOVERNMENT'S DELAY IN TAKING PROMISED ACTION IN FAVOUR OF THE FARMERS AGREED LAST AUTUMN.

IN AN EFFORT TO PROTECT CUSTOMERS IN THE MAIN CITIES, THE BUTCHERS HAD LAID IN A LARGE STOCK BEFORE THE STRIKE BEGAN. THE GOVERNMENT HAS ALSO TEMPORALLY LIFTED QUOTA RESTRICTIONS ON FOREIGN IMPORTS TO COUNTER THE SHORTAGE OF LOCALLY PRODUCED MEAT.

THE STRIKE, CURRENTLY OBSERVED BY ABOUT 70 PER CENT OF MEAT PRODUCERS, IS SCHEDULED TO END NEXT MONDAY.
