Chairman of the Palestinian Liberation Organisation (P.L.O), Mr. Yasser Arafat, arrived in Algiers on Wednesday?
Chairman of the Palestinian Liberation Organisation (P.L.O), Mr. Yasser Arafat, arrived in Algiers on Wednesday (17th January) for talks with other P.L.O. leaders.
He was met at the airport by M. Cherif Messaadia, head of the Eastern Algerian section of the National Liberation Front (N.L.F.), and M. Djeloud Malaika, also of the N.L.F.
The day after his arrival, Algeria's leaders appealed in a government communique for solidarity among Third World nations. They pledged that the non-aligned Summit Conference in Algiers next September would fulfil the "legitimate aspirations of the Third World peoples".
The communique stressed that "the National Liberation Movement, wherever it is, "should be strengthened," and unreserved support given to the Palestinian resistance."
Last week in Cairo Mr. Arafat attended the 11th session of the Palestine National Council, where he was re-elected Chairman of the P.L.O.
SYNOPSIS: The Chairman of the Palestinian Liberation Organisation, Yasser Arafat, arrived in Algiers on Wednesday. He was greeted by leading members of the National Liberation Front -- Cherif Messaadia and Djeloud Malaika. The bearded Monsieur Messaadia is head of the eastern division of the Algerian N.L.F.
During his stay in Algeria, Mr. Arafat held talks with several Liberation Front leaders. He was re-elected as Chairman of the Palestinian Liberation Organisation last week in Cairo.
Algiers is to be the meeting-place in September of the next Non-Aligned Summit Conference. In a government communique issued the day after Mr. Arafat's arrival, Algeria's leaders pledged that the Conference would fulfil "the legitimate aspirations of Third World peoples." They stressed that the National Liberation Movement should be strengthened everywhere.
The communique asked for unreserved support for the Palestinian Resistance.
