  • Description

Ministers responsible for social affairs in the Arab states called off a meeting in Khartoum on Tuesday (25 March) because of the death of King Faisal of Saudi Arabia.

The Ministers had gathered in the Sudanese capital to discuss relief and development aid for the country.

Sudan is already receiving large loans and grants from several Arab states following heavy floods in the south of the country at the end of last year.

More than 250,000 people were made homeless in the floods.

Sudan, the largest country in Africa, and covering vast semi-arid wastes, is potentially one of the world's major food producers.

The Arabs however, with all their oil wealth, are unable to raise crops to any significant degree.

The meeting of the Ministers responsible for social affairs was expected to discuss not only ways of helping the flood victims, but also ways of developing huge areas of the country.

The Sudanese leader, President Nimeiry gave a brief opening address to the Ministers before the conference was called off.

It is not known when it will be held again.
