  • Description

Visnews filmed West berlin June 17 as municipal, federal and foreign representatives, and relatives of the people killed during the East Berlin uprising June 17, 1953 gathered at Seestrasse cemetery to commemorate the fateful struggle for German unity.

In the presence of British, American and French guests West Berlin's Mayor Willy Brandt laid a wreath at the cemetery's monument for the men and women who lost their lives when Russian tanks and East German people's police crushed their attempt at forcing their way to freedom.

Similar meetings and ceremonies commemorating Unity Day were held throughout the Federal Republic of Germany. A pessimistic note was struck of the president of the constitutional court in Karlsruhe, Dr. Gebhard Mueller, who said that hopes of German reunification had never been so small as today. The Soviet Government had demonstrated its determination "to prevent it with a brutality that could not be surpassed."
