Background: Turkish military authorities have signalled their determination to crack down on extremist violence by sentencing to death a leftist gunman. The swiftness and harshness of the trial in the southern industrial city of Adana was seen as a warning to those who might oppose the military.

SYNOPSIS: Another victim of the recent wave of violence was a police chief shot down in Istanbul. Mr Aykut Genc and his wife were shot outside their home by two gunmen who escaped by car. His wife was seriously injured. There was a full turn-out of police for his funeral, held at the city's Sisli mosque. The National Security Council has pledged an end to factional violence. In the weeks leading up to the bloodless coup d'etat, 16 people were dying in political incidents each day.

Women police, chiefs of police from the Istanbul area and a group of high ranking officers from the martial law headquarters were among those attending the funeral. The killing was one of the bloodiest incidents since the military took power in Turkey on September the 12th.

To counter the threat of new terrorist activity, the security forces have been prominent. Helicopters have been making sorties from one side of the capital to the other, apparently engaged in surveillance. In the universities, strict security measure have been enforced.

The crackdown on violence was apparent at this trial in Adana. A leftist gunman was sentenced to death for his involvement in the killing of any army captain. A co-defendant was sentenced to eleven years in prison. However, neither man was believed to have fired the fatal shot. Security forces are looking for a third man suspected of having pulled the trigger.
