THE BOMB-DAMAGED CHURCH OF ST. MARY ALDERMANBURY MAY BE MOVED FROM LONDON TO AMERICA -?

  • Description

THE BOMB-DAMAGED CHURCH OF ST. MARY ALDERMANBURY MAY BE MOVED FROM LONDON TO AMERICA - AND RE-ERECTED ON THE CAMPUS OF FULTON UNIVERSITY. IT WAS BUILT BY SIR CHRISTOPHER WREN OVER 300 YEARS AGO. ONLY THE TOWER AND WALLS SURVIVED WORLD WAR TWO.

A BUST OF WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE, THE AUTHOR IS AMONG RELICS THERE. THE CHURCH CONTAINS THE REMAINS OF TWO OF HIS CONTEMPORARIES. THEY WERE PARTNERS (IT IS SAID) WITH SHAKESPEARE IN THE FAMOUS GLOBE THEATRE, WHERE HIS PLAYS WERE FIRST STAGED. THEY ARE CREDITED WITH COLLECTING SHAKESPEARE'S WORK AFTER HE DIED.

CHURCH OF ENGLAND AUTHORITIES HAVE AGREED TO AN OFFER BY THE UNIVERSITY. IT IS INTENDED TO DEMOLISH THE BUILDING AND SHIP THE STONES ACROSS THE ATLANTIC. BUT BEFORE THIS CAN BE DONE, VARIOUS INTERESTS HAVE TO GIVE THEIR CONSENT. THE CITY OF LONDON CORPORATION ARE ALSO INTERESTED AND ARE NEGOTIATING TO TAKE OVER THE SITE AS AN OPEN SPACE.

(OTHER FAMOUS WREN BUILDING IN THE CAPITAL INCLUDE ST. PAUL'S CATHEDRAL).
