  • Description

President V.V. Giri of India flew into Moscow on Tuesday (September 22) for his first state visit to the Soviet Union. During his eight day visit, he is scheduled for talks with Soviet leaders, including President Nikolai Podgorny--who was at the airport to meet the Indian head of state.

During the first-round of talks on Wednesday, the Middle East crisis was among the most important topics. At a Kremlin lunch given in honour of the 76-year-old Indian leader, President Podgorny called for a just agreement between Palestinians and other Middle East peoples.

He added that such an agreement would remove opportunities for outside interference in the delicate Middle East situation--and it was reported that he expressed his concern at the activities of the United States Sixth Fleet in the Eastern Mediterranean.

In his reply, President Giri said he was disappointed at the further deterioration in the Middle East situation, and declared that it was the duty of all states to ensure that the deterioration was checked.

Before his arrival in Moscow, President Giri made an overnight stopover in Tashkent, where he was shown Shastri Street, named after the late Indian Premier Lal Bahadur Shastri who died in the city--during negotiations with Pakistan--four years ago.
