  • Description

AUSTRALIAN BARRY SMITH WON THE 50 c.c. EVENT BY ALMOST EIGHT MINUTES IN THE TOURIST TROPHY INTERNATIONAL MOTOR CYCLE MEETING IN THE ISLE OF MAN TODAY (MONDAY). SMITH, RIDING A SPANISH DERBI, WON IN ONE HOUR 33 MINUTES 10.4 SECONDS IN THE 113.2 MILES (182.1 KILOMETRE) RACE AND AVERAGED 72.90 MILES AND HOUR (117.3 KPH).

TWO BRITONS, CHRIS WALPOLE AND LES GRIFFITHS, BOTH ON JAPANESE HONDAS, WERE SECOND AND THIRD RESPECTIVELY.

SMITH WAS LEFT OUT IN FRONT BY HIMSELF AFTER AN ACCIDENT AND A MECHANICAL FAILURE ELIMINATED HIS TWO MAIN RIVALS ON THE FIRST LAP. HIS SPANISH TEAM MATE, ANGEL NEITOROLDAN FROM MADRID, CRASHED 12 MILES (19 KILOMETRES) AFTER THE START AND BROKE HIS ANKLE AND WEST GERMANY RUDOLF KUNZ, FROM MAHLACKER, ON A KREIDELR, DROPPED OUT WITH A SEIZED ENGINE.

SMITH ALSO SET UP THE FASTEST LAP WITH AN AVERAGE SPEED OF 73.60 MILES AN HOUR (118.9 KPH).

ONLY 12 OF THE 33 STARTERS FINISHED THE RACE, AND WITH THE EXCEPTION OF SMITH, THE FIRST SIX RIDERS WERE ALL BRITONS ON JAPANESE HONDAS.
