  • Description

Disarmament and other means of lessening tension were discussed by the Nordic Foreign Ministers at their two day conference in Stockholm, which has just ended. They were unanimous in the view that everything possible should be done to end the disarmament deadlock at the United Nations, and that there should be a suspension in the testing of nuclear weapons as an initial step. It was agreed that at the same time negotiations on the stopping of fissionable material production and the reduction of conventional weapons should begin.

Other matters raised at the conference, which was attended by the trade ministers of these countries also, included the enforcement of the passport union agreement on May 1st. By this union passports will no longer be necessary for travel between these Scandinavian neighbours.

Concern was expressed at the growing use of 'flags of convenience', by commercial shipping, and it is hoped that the unfavourable publicity at present given to this matter would give-rise to non international intervention, and a limiting of the practice.

At a separate meeting of the trade ministers the progress of the Paris talks on the Free Trade Area was discussed.
