Background: Tatyana Kasankina of the Soviet Union has set a new women's 1500 metres world record at an international athletics meeting in Zurich. She clipped over two seconds off the previous record which she also held.

SYNOPSIS: The huge crowd which filled the Zurich stadium had come hoping that there might be a world record in the men's 1500 metres event.. but it wasn't to be. But they did get a metric mile world record.. and it was the women's event that provided it.

Tatyana Kasankina, fresh from winning the event at the Moscow Olympics, was in even more starling form in Zurich. She hit the front in the back straight of lap three and the crowd looked to a battle with world indoor mile record holder Mary Decker of the United States, lying second.

As the leaders approached the bell, a world record looked a possibility.

The tussle between the world's two great women middle distance athletes didn't eventuate. Kasankina ran an extraordinary final lap building up to the sort of speed normally seen in an 800 metres race. A world record now looked a certainty...the question, what time was the Russian champion capable of setting. Already she was more than five seconds ahead of Decker with the rest of the field out of contention. The crowd sensed they were watching one of the great performances by a woman athlete this year and gave enormous support.

Kasankina recorded a time of 3 minutes 52-point-47 seconds, the equivalent to a four minutes ten seconds mile.
