  • Description

JAPANESE REPORTERS SAW THE AMERICAN ARMY DEMONSTRATE THEIR NIKE-HERCULES AND HAWK MISSILES DURING AN EXERCISE ON FRIDAY AT THE U.S. AIR BASE ON OKINAWA ISLAND - ONCE THE SCENE OF DESPERATE WARTIME BATTLES BETWEEN THEIR TWO COUNTRIES.

THE NIKE-HERCULES AND HAWK MISSILES ARE USED MAINLY FOR GROUND TO AIR DEFENCE. THE NIKE-HERCULES HAS A SPEED OF OVER 1,500 MILES AN HOUR (2,414 KPH) AND A RANGE OF 75 MILES (121 KILOMETRES). IT CAN BE ARMED WITH EITHER A NUCLEAR OR A CONVENTIONAL WARHEAD AND CAN DESTROY ENEMY PLANES SINGLY OR IN FLIGHT FORMATION.

THE HAWK CAN REACH A HEIGHT OF ABOUT 6 1/2 MILES (ABOUT 10 1/2 KILOMETRES) BUT IS DESIGNED CHIEFLY FOR USE AGAINST LOW-FLYING AIRCRAFT. IT'S 27FT LONG (ABOUT 8 METRES) AND 14 INCHES (355.6 MILLIMETRES) IN DIAMETER.

JAPAN WANTS OKINAWA AND THE OTHER RYUKYU ISLANDS TO BE RETURNED TO HER CONTROL. AMERICA, HOWEVER, WISHES TO RETAIN CONTROL OF THE ISLANDS FOR THEIR STRATEGIC VALUE TO BOTH NATIONS. THIS PROBLEM WAS DISCUSSED WHEN MR. SATO, THE JAPANESE PRIME MINISTER, MET PRESIDENT JOHNSON IN WASHINGTON LAST WEEK. BUT, SO FAR, NO SATISFACTORY CONCLUSION HAS BEEN REACHED.
