  • Description

In Siren, Wisconsin united States sports enthusiasts have dreamed up a novel way of keeping themselves amused during the winter months.

They have organised a water-skipping contest, using snowmobiles. The idea is to get the snowmobiles up to speed -- 50 miles (over 80 kms) per hour or better over snow and ice, than skip over a stretch of open water on Claim Lake narrows and make it to the far chore. Some succeed and some do not.

The contest is said to have originated a few years ago when a small group of snowmobilers got together on their way home from an outing. The local lions Club took up the idea and now it has become an annual event.

This year there were 20 contestants in the Siren Snowmobile Water Skipping Contest, which went off to everyone's satisfaction. The longest run over open water was 619 feet (about 200 metres), no-one drowned and they managed to retrieve all the machines from the lake.
