  • Description

One man was killed and more than 20 other persons hurt Sunday (31 Jan.) in rioting after a demonstration by several thousand Mexican-Americans, who assembled in a park, were protesting alleged police brutality in the past. Leaders of the demonstration cooperated with police in an attempt to avoid violence.

But after the demonstration ended, several hundred youths began looting sores and setting fires. They clashed repeatedly with police. Authorities said the man who was killed was shot by a deputy sheriff while the man and several companions were throwing rocks and bricks at the police.

At least 10 other people were treated for gunshot wounds. One man was seriously injured when hit by an automobile. Forty stores were damaged by fires or vandalism.

One purpose of the peaceful demonstration was to protest the action of police last August, when three persons were killed in violence after a demonstration by Mexican-Americans against the war in Vietnam. One of those killed was Ruben Salazar, radio newsman who was sitting in a restaurant when a policeman fired a tear-gas projectile through a window. Local authorities refused to prosecute the officer.
