SITHOLE: "The Rhodesian deferred exercise means majority rule now, and not the future. IF Rhodesian Government does not accept majority rule now, the terms of the Foreign Ministers conclusions would be considered to have failed in the reference to Rhodesia. Rhodesian Constitutional conference should therefore be aiming at achieving a transfer of power to the majority now. The question facing Rhodesia is not whether the Europeans accept majority rule or not, but whether they prefer Africans to achieve it peaceably or violently because coming it is very soon whether your (indistinct) like it or not. It would be foolish on the part of Europeans to decide not to transfer power to the majority peacefully (indistinct) after prolonged armed struggle would disastrously affect the existence of Europeans in this country."

Background: An African Nationalist leader, Dr. Edson Sithole, warned white Rhodesians on Saturday (12 April) that an armed struggle for majority rule would disastrously affect their existence.
The warning came following the recent conference of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) which threatened to intensify guerilla warfare if negotiations over Rhodesia and South West Africa failed.
Dr. Sithole, Publicity Secretary of the African National Council (ANC) also warned that unless African detainees were released there would be no talks with the Rhodesian Government.
