  • Description

President Gerald Ford of the United States has now been in the White House for one year. He took over the job on 9 August 1974 when former President Richard Nixon resigned at the height of the Watergate scandal.

Although Mr. Ford got off to a shaky start and generated considerable criticism when he pardoned the former President for his involvement in Watergate, his star has risen ini the months since and public opinion polls now show half the population approves of the way of the way he handles his job.

He has declared his intention to seek another four-year term in 1976. Before making that decision, he said he had to consider the health of his wife, Betty.

Mrs. Ford, 57, was operated on for breast cancer last September and is known to suffer from arthritis in her back when she becomes fatigued. During the recent visit she and her husband made to Europe for the Helsinki summit meeting, she complained of weariness in several countries and failed to accompany her husband to some official functions.

But during a special interview to mark his first year in office, President Ford said her health was better than it had been for several years and that he foresaw no problem that would prevent his from pursuing his candidacy.

As for Mrs. Ford, she says the first year has been fun, although she admits both she and the President were apprehensive when they stopped into the White House.

But now she says her husband feels secure in his job.
