    THE NEW ZEALAND FRIGATE, OTAGO, WHICH WAS INVOLVED IN A COLLISION IN HONOLULU RECENTLY, STEAMED INTO SINGAPORE ON OCTOBER 17 TO TAKE HER PLACE AS NEW ZEALAND'S CONTRIBUTION TO THE BRITISH FAR EAST FLEET.

    AS SHE STEAMED INTO THE BRITISH NAVAL BASE, A SEVEN-GUN SALUTE WAS FIRED BY THE NAVAL BASE POLICE.

    THE 2,500-TON OTAGO, REPLACES HER SISTER SHIP TARANAKI, WHICH SAILED FOR NEW ZEALAND AFTER TEN MONTHS DUTY WITH THE FLEET.

    COMMANDED BY CAPTAIN E.C. THORNE, OTAGO IS A FAST ANTI-SUBMARINE FRIGATE. APART FROM HER UNDERWATER DETECTION DEVICES, SHE IS FITTED WITH TWIN 4.5 INCH GUNS AND THE SEACAT MISSILE SYSTEM. SHE HAS A COMPLEMENT OF ABOUT 220 OFFICERS AND RATINGS.

    SOON AFTER SHE WAS BERTHED, SEVERAL SENIOR OFFICERS OF THE FAR EAST FLEET BOARDED HER.
