    IN THE STEAMY HEAT OF HOLLANDIA, WEST NEW GUINEA - A STRIKING CONTRAST TO THE MILD CLIMATE OF THEIR HOMELAND - DUTCH TROOPS CELEBRATED THE BIRTHDAY AND 25TH WEDDING ANNIVERSARY OF QUEEN JULIANA OF THE NETHERLANDS, APRIL 30TH.

    HIGHLIGHT OF THE DAY WAS A MILITARY PARADE BEFORE THE GOVERNOR OF WEST NEW GUINEA, DR. P.J. PLATTEEL, WATCHED BY THOUSANDS OF EUROPEANS, PAPUANS AND THE OTHER VARIED RACES OF THE TERRITORY'S CAPITAL. MEMBERS OF THE PAPUAN LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL TOOK THEIR PLACES ON THE OFFICIAL DAIS WHILE GOVERNOR PLATTEEL INSPECTED THE PARADE WITH ADMIRAL L.E. REESER, SUPREME COMMANDER OF THE DUTCH FORCES IN THE AREA. SERVICE MEDALS WERE PRESENTED TO A NUMBER OF THE TROOPS INCLUDING THE COMMANDER OF THE MARINE-CORPS, COLONEL DE ROOS.

    OVERHEAD ROARED LONG-RANGE NEPTUNE BOMBERS, SALUTING THE PARADE BEFORE CONTINUING OBSERVATION FLIGHTS OVER THE WATERS WHICH SEPARATE THE ISLAND COAST FROM NEIGHBOURING INDONESIA. MARCHING WITH THE DUTCH TROOPS IN THE PARADE WERE MEMBERS OF THE PAPUAN VOLUNTEER CORPS, CLAD IN KHAKI SHORTS AND PLUMED SLOUCH HATS.

    IN THE FEW WEEKS BEFORE THE PARADE, 1500 MARINES WERE FLOWN FROM HOLLAND TO REINFORCE THE DUTCH GARRISON IN WEST NEW GUINEA AND A FURTHER 1500 TROOPS WERE ON THEIR WAY BY SEA. PRESIDENT SOEKARNO OF INDONESIA, WHO CLAIMS THE TERRITORY, HAS WARNED THAT IF THE DUTCH HAVE NOT EVACUATED IT BY THE END OF THE YEAR HE MIGHT TRY TO TAKE IT BY FORCE.
