    Buddhist refugees from North Vietnam held their annual Spring parade in Saigon, South Vietnam, recently, praying for their compatriots north of the 17th. parallel-arbitrary division between Communist and non-communist regions.

    Marchers carry images of Buddha on a decorated throne, swords, and sweetly-burning joss-sticks. In the course of the parade some marchers, seized by religious ecstasy, fall into a trance. Men in this state pierce themselves with steel spears, in return for some divine favour.

    The procession goes on for hours, ending at a Buddhist temple.
