  • Description

Six months after the liberation of Bangladesh, signs of discontent with the Awami League Government of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman are beginning to appear.

During the past week, members of a splinter group from the Awami League's Students movement have again been demonstrating in Dacca. Earlier in the month, more than a hundred people had been injured by clashes between the splinter group and students supporting the government.

The dissident students have condemned the government for lack of action in solving the legacy of economic and social problems left by the civil war. There are reports of corruption among administrative officials - claims that they are lining their pockets at the expense of the people.

Increasing lawlessness is also reported. Despite a government drive to round-up all weapons, thousands of former guerrillas have not yet handed in their arms.

Coverage of the student demonstration and an oath-taking ceremony in Dacca, shot on Wednesday (July 26), is supplemented by library film of the security forces searching for arms and looted property.
