    The first steps in the merger between Libya and Egypt were discussed when a delegation from Egypt went to Tripoli on Friday, 31 August. The delegation was led by Dr. Abdel Kader Hatem, the Egyptian Deputy Premier, and included other government representatives and members of the military.

    The Egyptian visitors watched celebrations marking the fourth anniversary of the revolution which ousted the Libyan monarchy. Colonel Muammar Gaddafi, the Libyan Leader was said to be too ill to attend the celebrations, but his illness was not specified. Colonel Gaddafi was expected to deal with developments regarding the merger in a major speech, but it was postponed.

    The two countries agreed last Wednesday (29th August) on the gradual merger. The egyptian delegation discussed the creation of a free trade zone, a joint currency, and the formation of a higher council to carry out stomach energy and electronics projects.
