  • Description

In Spain, eight people have been killed and forty wounded in a bomb blast in a Madrid cafe and three senior army officers assassinated, also in the Spanish capital. The assassinations on Friday (25 May) and the bombing of the cafe on Saturday (26 May), plus other guerrilla attacks have led to calls by right-wingers for a "national uprising" against the government and a military takeover.

SYNOPSIS: The California 47 cafe popular with right-wingers was crowded with about one hundred customers when the bomb exploded. The five kilogram (eleven pound) bomb had been planted in the basement. A waiter said that the cafe had received a telephone call warning of a bomb. But the waiter said, "we've had so many hoaxes that we took no notice". Police said later they had defused a second bomb in the basement. An anonymous telephone caller to a Pamplona newspaper claimed that responsibility for the bomb blast lay with the Basque separatist organisation, E.T.A. However the left-wing anti-fascist group, GRAPO is also suspected of the cafe bombing. It was the worst bomb attack since the death of General Franco in 1975 and once again brought calls from Franco supporters for a return to order...with military intervention.

The military were in force at the funeral earlier on Saturday (26 May) of General Gomez Hortiguela and two Colonels, who were ambushed and shot dead a day before in a car in a Madrid street.

Despite security precautions two thousand right-wingers demonstrated during the funeral at the Madrid Army headquarters. They called for the army to seize power.

Despite the demands of the right-wingers, the Army Chief of Staff General Alfaro Arregui pledged before the funeral ceremony that the assassination of the three amy officers would not shake the loyalty of the armed forces to king Juan Carlos and the government.
