    "THE NIGHT OF THE GENERALS", A NEW FILM PRODUCED BY SAM SPIEGEL AND DIRECTED BY ANATOLE LITVAK, HAD ITS PREMIERE AT THE ODEON, LEICESTER SQUARE IN LONDON LAST NIGHT (FRIDAY). THOUGH SET DURING AND JUST AFTER THE SECOND WORLD WAR, THE FILM VARIES FROM THE RUN-OF-THE-MILL WAR STORIES. THE CENTRAL THEME IS THE MACABRE BUTCHERING OF A NUMBER OF WOMEN, AND THE THREE MAIN SUSPECTS ARE THREE GERMAN GENERALS, PLAYED BY PETER O'TOOLE, DONALD PLEASENCE AND CHARLES GRAY. OTHER STAR PARTS ARE PLAYED BY OMAR SHARIF, AS A GERMAN MILITARY INTELLIGENCE OFFICER SEEKING THE PSYCHOPATHIC KILLER, AND JOANNA PETTET AS THE DAUGHTER OF ONE OF THE GENERALS. THE PREMIERE WAS A GLITTERING AND STAR-STUDDED OCCASION WHICH ATTRACTED MANY OF LONDON'S LEADING SOCIALITES.

    THE FILM IS THE FIRST TO BE MADE UNDER A NEW FRANCO-BRITISH FILM-MAKING AGREEMENT. THE STORY OPENS IN NAZI-OCCUPIED WARSAW AND MOVES ON TO ITS SHATTERING CONCLUSION IN PRESENT-DAY NUREMBURG.

    AMONG THE MANY STARS AND PERSONALITIES AT THE PREMIERE WERE PRODUCER SAM SPIEGEL, STARS OF THE FILM OMAR SHARIF AND JOANNA PETTET, YUL BRYNNER, JOHN MILLS, NATALIE WOOD, ANTHONY QUAYLE AND FRENCH ACTRESS VERONIQUE VENDELL.
