GUBER:".....And Makinen away... that's the start of the 24th R.A.C. Rally of Great Britain. Makinen away with his co-driver Henry Liddon....away he goes. Second man away and this is a new car. Ford have got two complete teams of five cars in this rally -- that's 10 cars in all."

WALKER: "And there is the man who has won for the last three years -- 1973, 1974 and last year, 1975. The great Finnish driver Timo Makinen. Watch this ....Henry Liddon, Makinen's co-driver, who's driven with him for a long time, looks quite dispassionately out of the window as though he's on a seaside run down to the coast.

"And into sight comes the hard man from Sweden. The man who won the R.A.C. rally in 1971 in a Saab -- Stig Blomquist -- not this one -- and this is the new Saab 99 out in the R.A.C. rally for the first time. The man who won in 1972, who is the reigning British champion, the great Roger Clark, in his Ford Escort RS2,000 - 240 brake horsepower. And here is another of the very, very quick men and it's none other than Bjorn Waldegaard himself. Fired from the Lancia team last year.

And while the competitors are thundering down the tracks, spectators are walking down them. Only leaving at the last moment as the competitors approach. And look at this for arrant stupidity. Spectators on the circuit -- and that child only clearing the track at the very last moment as Waldegaard bares down on him at nearly 100 miles an hour."

RIPPON: "After his accident Makinen continued in his battered Escort but trouble developed and he had to stop and check the car. The damage to his back axle and differential was irreparable."

MAKIMEN:"...I am out now because first we rolled over but that's we only lost three-and-a-half-minutes there but straight after that the disc brake and ow we find what is wrong. It's this gone. So now we are definitely out."
