    Finnish driver, Pentti Airikkala had established a narrow early lead late on Saturday (27 November) on the first day of the British Royal Automobile Club Motor Rally. However, rally favourite and fellow Finn, Timo Makinen was forced to retire from the 2,900 kilometre (1,800) mile event soon after the start in the Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire. Makinen and co-driver Henry Liddon of Britain hit trouble soon after the start of the special stages section when their car overturned.
